Tour Details

Join us on this inspiring hiking adventure that will take you to some of the most scenic settings of the west of Ireland.

Travel from the wildflower covered landscape of the Burren hiking along the wild western shores of the Atlantic to the Aran Islands and over the mountainous wildernesses of Connemara.

Visit remote Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) communities and stay in authentic comfortable Irish accommodation. Discover flowers from the arctic and the southern Mediterranean while exploring the Burren hiking. Your knowledgeable guide will provide a fascinating insight into the rich cultural and geological history of these rocky wild landscapes. They will help you identify the rich flora that we will come across, such as the unusual Spring Gentian or the Bee Orchid; identify wildlife that we will spot on our walks and introduce you to some of the west coast’s most colourful characters.

What to Expect

  • Group Size: Maximum 8
  • Total Length: 41 km
  • Average walks: 4 hours

This trip is graded moderate. Our moderate graded walking holidays involve straightforward hiking, following generally good trails with no major ascents. These walks are pretty leisurely and will last for around 5 hours each day. The terrain underfoot will usually be on paths or hill trails, which may still be muddy or rough in places. The daily walks are mainly glen and coastal hikes, with some ascents of low level hills, up to around 1,500 feet / 450m high.

Day 1Hike along The Cliffs of Moher

From Galway city we drive a short distance to the heart of one of Europe’s most fascinating landscapes. The unique rocky limestone wilderness of the Burren hiking in the afternoon along the cliff edges of the staggering 700ft high Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs of Moher area is home to the largest colony of nesting seabirds on mainland Ireland. (D)

Day 2Hiking the Burren Way

The Burren is renowned the world over for its rocky grey limestone landscape, that in spring and summer transforms into a myriad of colour hosting one of the highest diversities of wild flowers in Europe. Flowers from the arctic and the southern Mediterranean occur here. Today we will climb the iconic Mullaghmore Mountain following the Burren Way through this fascinating landscape. While enjoying the Burren hiking, we will also meet with a local farmer who will explain the importance of farming to the conservation of this fascinating landscape. (B,L)

Day 3Aran Islands

Renowned the world over the three isolated rocky outcrops of the Aran Islands once held a position of great trading power in ancient Ireland. Today they are a bastion of traditional language, culture and music, unique in their geology and archaeology and alive with a potent sense of history. Inis Oirr is the smallest of these Gaeltacht islands and we shall spend the day exploring its winding paths and white sand beaches; marvelling at its towering dry stone walls, feats of spectacular sculptural achievement. This evening we shall catch the ferry to our island retreat on Inis Mór. (B,L)

Day 4Aran Island of Inis Mór

Inis Mór is the largest of the Aran Islands and home to one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe: Dún Aonghusa (Dun Aengus) is a semi-circular stone fort that sits dramatically on top of a 100 metre drop into the sea. Our hike will take us up to this spectacular location over huge slabs of limestone pavement; taking in magnificent views of Galway Bay, Connemara and Black Head in the Burren. (B,L)

Day 5Connemara

Described by Oscar Wilde as ‘a savage beauty’, the spectacular mountain and bog wilderness of Connemara is best experienced by foot. This morning we shall set sail for Connemara. Behind the picturesque village of Roundstone is Errisbeg hill and the twin white sand beaches of Gurteen and Dogs Bay. Our hike may take us to the summit of Errisbeg or along the coast depending on the weather. After our hike we shall retire to our accommodation in the village of Roundstone overlooking Bertraghboy Bay. (B,L)

Day 6Diamond hill

Connemara National Park covers some 2,957 hectares of wild mountains, bogs and grasslands and is frequented by peregrine falcons, wild mountain goats and native red deer. Todays hike will explore this spectacular wilderness perhaps taking in the iconic Diamond Hill which stands at its western edge, commanding an expansive panorama of Atlantic Ocean. This afternoon there will be time to explore the craft shops and cafés of the village of Clifden. (B,L,D)

Day 7Departure

After a relaxing breakfast, we will say goodbye and transfer to Galway train station. (B)
